How do we promote learning in Reading?

We aim to equip pupils with knowledge, skills and the understanding to gain a love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. During their time at school, we believe pupils should be taught to read easily, fluently and confidently with a good understanding of what they have read. We highly regard reading for both pleasure and information and promote this widely and often.

Click here to view the Reading Spine at St John's. This details the various texts that we expose our children to, giving them the skills to become fluent readers and allowing them to enjoy a wide range of texts.

‘I like reading because I become lost in the story’ Daniel Y3
‘I enjoy listening to class novels’ Rosie Y2
‘I like reading interesting books and finding new vocabulary to use in my writing’ Jacob Y6

What does Reading look like at St John's?

At St. John’s School, we recognise the importance of reading in every aspect of daily life. As one of the core subjects taught in Primary Schools, we give the teaching and learning of reading the prominence it requires.
