St John's CE (VA) J and I School

Our intent is to develop pupils who can…

Foster their curiosity and confidence to explore another country, its culture and language.

Express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

Communicate effectively for practical purposes, equipping children for a multi-lingual society and for future study and work in other countries.

French

How do we promote learning in French?

We use a practical approach by orally communicating with each other and participating in simple verbal exchanges.

We find out about French culture and immerse ourselves in this through topics around food, the environment, family life…

“I feel good learning about another language & the French culture!”

“It’s great hearing the French speakers through our Seesaw App.”  Jack Y6

What does French look like at St John's?

A high quality spoken language that lays the foundations for written language.

Children are taught how to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, by focussing on familiarity and routines in everyday life.

They will use their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary when speaking.
