St John's CE (VA) J and I School

We are committed to caring for our world and playing our part in protecting God’s creation for future generations. In line with the Diocese’s Saving Creation plan, we actively work to reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices across the school. We believe that caring for the environment is both a responsibility and an important learning opportunity, helping children to understand stewardship, respect and the impact of their choices on the world around them.
As part of this commitment, we have joined the Let’s Go Carbon Zero campaign and are taking part in the Count Your Carbon scheme, supporting us to measure, understand and reduce our environmental impact. This work links closely with our school vision of “growing together in one family”, as we recognise that caring for our shared home is something we do together. By working collectively as a school community, we encourage our pupils to take responsibility for one another and for God’s world, growing into thoughtful, responsible citizens who care for creation now and in the future.

How can parents and carers help?
Parents and carers can play an important role in helping our school reduce its carbon footprint. Small changes made at home and on the school run can have a big collective impact. Here are some simple ways you can help:
  • Car share where possible with other families to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
  • Walk, bike or scoot to school if it is safe and practical, helping to reduce emissions while promoting healthy habits.
  • Use reusable tubs and bottles for snacks and packed lunches instead of disposable packaging or cling film.
  • Reduce food waste by carefully considering portion sizes and choosing foods your child enjoys and is likely to eat.
  • Choose reusable rather than single-use items, such as cloth napkins or refillable yogurt pouches.
  • Switch off engines when parked outside school to reduce air pollution around our site.
  • Reuse and donate school uniform when possible, helping to cut down on waste and prolong the life of clothing. Please see the information about the fantastic Uniform exchange in Huddersfield on this page.
  • Encourage recycling at home, reinforcing the messages children learn in school.
  • Support sustainable choices such as seasonal foods and locally sourced products in lunchboxes where possible.
As a school we will be working on: the four key areas set out by the DfE:
1. Decarbonisation: how the setting is preparing for and responding to the impacts of climate change
2. Adaptation and resilience: efforts to protect and enhance nature and wildlife within the setting and its surroundings
3. Biodiversity : how learners are supported to understand climate change, sustainability, and develop relevant skills
4. Climate education and green career; actions to measure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, working towards net zero

Our Eco Team will work together to support our drive to help to save creation and support our journey to carbon zero.

WOW walk to school challenge

We are pleased to be taking part in the WOW – Walk to School scheme, which encourages children to travel to school in healthier and more sustainable ways. WOW is a pupil‑led initiative where children record how they travel to school each day using the interactive WOW Travel Tracker, with our Helping Heroes team supporting and monitoring participation. Children who travel sustainably at least once a week are rewarded with a collectable monthly WOW badge, helping to motivate and celebrate positive choices. This scheme links closely to our school vision of “growing together in one family”, as we work together to look after one another’s health, reduce our impact on the environment and build lifelong habits. By encouraging walking, wheeling and shared responsibility, WOW helps our whole school family grow stronger, healthier and more connected.
